Cheap Snowboard Bindings – riding on a budget of 150$

Snowboarding can be expensive. We need a good amount of gear, most of us have to take holidays and the closest slopes might be hundreds of kilometres aways – maybe more. Together with the lift pass, we easily spend heaps for what we love, so maybe you want to go a bit easy on your bindings. Here is a list of cheap snowboard bindings to consider!

Renting gear every time we go riding, can quickly add up to the same amount we would spend on our own stuff, so most people buy soon after they started snowboarding. Of course everyone prioritizes here and I can understand that bindings might be the last thing to look at.

The board affects our ride more than the bindings do and clothes are always important anyway. We want to stay dry, warm and let´s be honest, more or less we are all fashion boarders – so it has to look nice, too 😉

But, the bindings are still crucial! They need to cope with a lot force and failures can be devastating for you and others! Not to mentioned how much time the big players invest to make their bindings as comfortable as possible. So I am afraid to tell you, you will have to spend a few bucks to be safe and enjoy your day riding. Also, good things last longer and a decent binding can last for years!

SALOMON RhYTHM

salomon rhythm

The Salomon Rhythm is a beginner to intermediate binding with a soft FLEX. Good for people who don´t want to rent and get more consistency. The 2018 model has quite a few specs that higher priced bindings have!

  • Adjustable toe ramp
    • We want our boots to stick out evenly on both ends of the binding. This can be fine-tuned with a toe ramp that slides back and forth. But first, get the right binding size!
  • Tool-free strap adjustments
    • Straps that sit properly are crucial for comfort and response. Make sure they sit centred over your boots.
  • HB-Filter
    • Salomon´s very own vibration filter in the highback that absorbs shocks.
  • Asymmetrical highback
    • more comfort through an anatomical shape for more support.
  • Canted footbed
    • The footbed is canted at 2.5° to give you a more natural stance and goes easy on your knees. It´s also fully cushioned to absorb impacts.

K2 SONIC

k2 sonic

Also comes around with a soft FLEX, it´s a 2 on the scale to be exact. It´s made for everyone who is new to snowboarding or does spend his day in the park. I also could see this being a great second binding to have, if you want to switch to a really soft one for kickers and rails during the day since it´s fully tool-less adjustable. Literally everything can be adjusted without a screwdriver.

Things to mention are:

  • Lightweight chassis
    • Less weight is always good
  • Adjustable toe ramp
    • Make it fit perfectly on the size of your boots as long as you get the right binding size.
  • GapEraser Highback
    • With adjustments on the highback you can eliminate the smallest gap between your boots and the binding for the perfect fit.
  • Neoprene Cushioning
    • K2 added neoprene to their straps which gives you some extra grip
  • 100% tool-less
    • pretty cool, especially for that prize. You might assume that, once your binding is set up, there is nothing to worry about as long as you don´t change the boots. But your gear moves and twists during the day, so re adjustments can be required. It´s always a good idea to check a few times during the day.

FLOW ALPHA

flow alphaFLOW and their backdoor design – you either love it, or hate it. It makes getting in much easier compared to strap bindings and therefore is often loved by beginners. That is the reason why I sneaked that one in the list, even though it´s 10 bucks over budget.

FLOW is evolving for over 20 years now and they create great bindings for all ability levels. Some say, they lack in response, other say you only hear that from people who never tried! But anyway, the Alpha is a soft and forgiving binding for beginners to intermediates and at this stage, you might not even notice a difference. What you get in the end is more riding because you get in quicker, way quicker!

  • Rear-entry System
    • That is what FLOW is known for. The highback folds down so you easily can get in. Simply pull it up again and you are good to go.
  • Rockered Baseplate
    • the rockered design of the baseplate gives the board more freedom to bend what reveals it´s true flex.
  • Exo-fit Powerstrap
    • Converts ankle strap and toe strap into one piece that covers your boot. That spreads out pressure and results in more comfort. It does have buckles as well to finely adjust the strap to your boots.

Burton Freestyle

burton freestyle

The Burton Freestyle is the entry-level binding of Burton, the name in the snowboard industry. It has a medium FLEX which absolutely fine, if you had a few days on the snow already and actually, that might keep you happy for longer! Goes well with the eager beginner to intermediate or freestyler.

  • Re:FLEX Disc
    • Smaller mounting disk than the one from competitors for more flex and feel. Also, compatible on every mounting system out there.
  • MicroFLAD highback adjustment
    • Let´s you adjust your forward lean to the millimetre without the need of tools!
  • FlexSlider
    • The ankle strap pops out of the way when you open it. That make things so much easier when you get back in. I mean, everyone struggles with their straps, so if you don´t have to worry about the big one – hell yeah, you are going to appreciate that on the hill.
  • FullBED Cushioning
    • The cushioning covers the whole foot bed for more comfort. The mounting system still can be easily accessed through a “trap door” that opens if needed.

Still a lot to choose from

Hard to make a decision here, isn´t it. I´d love to narrow it down to one binding for you but that is not really how it works, there is no such thing like the best binding. I want to give you a quick overview again with one argument for each binding.

Salomon Rhythm / Spell

  • Canted footbed – seems like a detail but really gives you a more natural stance. If your knees feel uncomfortable first, that can be what you are looking for.

K2 Sonic

  • 100% Tool less – do you want to change a lot? That´s the one

FLOW Alpha / haylo

  • Well, it´s a FLOW – the backdoor system let you get in quick and easy.

Burton Freestyle / Citizen

Rome United / Shift

  • Highback rotation – fully adjustable from 0° to 24° so you always can line up your heel edge with your highback, no matter what stance you ride.

Union FLITE PRO / Rosa

  • Super F*ckingLITE – Less weight is important for some riders. Also, the highback is really twistable

Roxy Classic

  • Asymmetrical highback

10 Replies to “Cheap Snowboard Bindings – riding on a budget of 150$

  1. I really liked the design of Flow Alpha. and you are actually right. My friend also suggested it to me since I am a beginner and I can get in easier.

  2. Very informative Manny! I especially like the K2 brand because I am familiar with their rollerblades. One question for my husband, he loves to snowboard but only has a couple of times. I am not sure what kind of bindings he has but he developed a bunion because of it. What type of bindings would you suggest for someone with flat feet and wide calves who is a beginner to intermediate? Thank you

    1. Hi Colleen.

puh, I would double check with him if the binding caused that issue. I would say it´s much more likely that he is riding boots which are too small or he totally over tighten his toestrap, but I really do think the main issue here is the boot.

He has to make sure the binding fits the size of his boot, but first of all, the boots has to fit his feet!

For the issue with flat feet he can consider insoles for the boots and with wide calves, it´s important that his highback lines up with his backside edge. Check out this post for further informations.

      I hope that helps!

  3. Lots of good info and links for boarders here and even for beginners. I have tried a few times and liked it, since I grew up surfing! For the future in case I want to ride again, I have some good info on pricing for bindings. Well written and informative!

    1. Glad you like it David, let me know if you need help! Surfing is fantastic as well! I surf and kitesurf, both tons of fun! I could not live without snow, though 🙂

Let me know if I can help you with anything!
